 2006 Relay for Kids April 30th was no ordinary Sunday at Sylvan Park in Redlands. Adorned with a panoply of colorful tents, food vendors, arts and crafts, live entertainment, sports tournaments and car show, the park was transformed into the “11th Annual RELAY for KIDS and FunFest,” presented by Walgreens. Through the combined efforts of relay teams, this year’s event was a tremendous success, raising a record high of more than $169,000. Eighty-five captains led their teams through a six-hour relay race as they took turns walking, jogging, or running the one-mile course, raising money for the Loma Linda Ronald McDonald House. Participants enjoyed playing basketball, volleyball, horseshoe, softball and Frisbee golf in the Sports Zone sponsored by the Friends of Loma Linda. Children of all ages enjoyed the Kids’ Zone, presented by Southwest Airlines throughout the day. Ronald McDonald, SpongeBob Squarepants and other enchanting characters presented by J-Force Entertainment joined in the festivities. The Foresters helped our volunteers by providing soda, water and cookies for them throughout the day. The fun-filled day ended with awards and closing ceremonies. The teams from “1-800-Got-Junk?” and the “Eighties Ladies” both took home prizes for “Best Team Costume” and “Best Team Dance,” from the team song and dance contests. Blair High School JROTC, Redlands High School JROTC, and Rialto Middle School all received awards for the “Best Team Sportsmanship.” Awards were also presented to the winners of various sports and games. Collect-A-Million Day - The annual Collect-A-Million Day, held March 8, 2006, was more successful than ever before. Hundreds of dedicated tab collectors delivered 18,668,870 pull-tabs to the Ronald McDonald House. More than $10,000 was raised from the 14,758 pounds of tabs recycled.
